ChatGPT Ads: prepare your website and landing page for AI advertising

Ads inside ChatGPT introduce a channel that differs from traditional search. A campaign can bring the click; only a relevant, fast and verifiable page can turn it into a result.

In brief

As of 1 September 2026, OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Ads Manager availability for advertisers based in Europe. For an Italian business, preparation is now operational: check account access, build a landing page aligned with the ad, make it accessible to OAI-AdsBot and configure measurement and privacy around the tools that are actually enabled.

A campaign cannot fix the page it lands on

OpenAI considers the conversation context, the ad and its destination. Quality therefore has to remain consistent across the whole journey.

  1. 01Define one useful action
  2. 02Link the ad to the most relevant page
  3. 03Make the destination readable by people and crawlers
  4. 04Measure without ignoring privacy and consent
Design the journey first, then buy traffic. Reversing the order means paying to discover problems that were already visible.

An ad is only one step in the journey

The person is already exploring, comparing or deciding within a conversation. The website has to continue that reasoning without forcing them to start again.

01

Conversation

The context expresses a problem, comparison or intent. It does not necessarily correspond to one keyword.

02

Selection

The system considers relevance and expected outcomes alongside the title, copy, image, destination and context hints.

03

Advertiser name, favicon, title, description, image and link must present a recognisable and accurate proposition.

04

Landing

The page must immediately confirm the promise, offer, audience and action without detours or conflicting messages.

05

Decision

Evidence, terms, costs, limits and answers to objections let people evaluate the offer without needless friction.

06

Conversion

An enquiry, purchase or registration needs a clear confirmation, proper error handling and proportionate measurement.

Continuity is the real requirement

If the ad and page tell two different stories, conversion rate is not the only issue: the destination integrity required by advertising policies may also be affected.

A citation, an organic result and an ad are not the same thing

Being selected as a source, appearing in ChatGPT Search and buying a sponsored placement rely on different systems. Paying does not change the organic answer.

Presence What triggers it Business control Measurement
Citation in an answer Retrieval and selection of sources considered useful for the answer. Indirect: quality, accessibility, authority and content availability. Observed citations, referrals and platform tools when available.
ChatGPT Search result Indexing and relevance of public content accessible to OAI-SearchBot. Technical and editorial SEO/GEO, with no guarantee of appearance. Referrals with utm_source=chatgpt.com, logs and analytics.
ChatGPT Ads Campaign, auction, relevance, eligibility and advertising policies. Creative, offer, destination, budget and setup within product rules. Impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC, CPM and configured conversions.

ChatGPT Ads Manager is now available to advertisers based in Europe

The European launch changes the starting point for Italian businesses: this is no longer only preparation for a future channel, but a need to verify access, conditions, markets and configuration before investing.

Update: 1 September 2026

OpenAI has announced Ads Manager access for European advertisers

Availability concerns the advertiser’s place of establishment. It does not automatically mean that every account is already enabled, every category can advertise or every European country can be selected as a campaign audience.

Before planning budgets and dates, check Ads Manager in the relevant account, the countries actually available, the applicable policies and the current product terms.

Check account access and eligibility

Ads Manager access, advertiser details, sector, destination and creative must meet current requirements and policies.

Design the campaign and page together

Objective, audience, promise, ad and landing page must describe one consistent journey to the intended action.

Enable only the measurement you need

UTM parameters, Pixel, Conversions API, cookies and matching affect data and obligations: introduce them only when needed and with a documented setup.

Verify the crawler and destination

OAI-AdsBot must be able to reach a public, stable, relevant, fast and usable page without blocks from robots rules, WAF, CDN or CAPTCHA.

Why the homepage is rarely the best destination

OpenAI recommends relevant product, collection or content pages instead of defaulting to a generic homepage. A campaign starts from a specific intent and needs an equally specific answer.

One promise

The headline and opening confirm the exact benefit introduced by the ad without slogans that require interpretation.

One audience

The copy makes clear who the offer is for, what problem it solves and when it is not the right solution.

One journey

Hierarchy, evidence and objections lead towards one primary action without menus, pop-ups or alternatives that scatter attention.

One verification

URL, HTTP status, form, confirmation, analytics and tracking are tested before budget is connected to the page.

Landing page does not mean thin page

It means a focused page. It can contain a great deal, provided every element reduces uncertainty or supports the intended action.

Relevance is built from promise to confirmation

Title, copy, image, context and destination must describe the same offer. Repeating words is not enough: substantive consistency matters.

Concrete value

Explain what the person gets, who benefits and in which situation, avoiding claims such as “innovative solution” without evidence.

Informative title

The title anticipates the outcome or offer category. It does not use artificial curiosity to win a poorly qualified click.

Complementary copy

The description adds terms, benefits or context instead of repeating the headline in different words.

Relevant image

The creative supports the message, stays simple and does not imitate ChatGPT’s interface or suggest nonexistent endorsement.

Consistent destination

Brand, product, price, availability and terms match what the ad presented.

Recognisable action

The button describes what happens: enquire, buy, book or register. “Learn more” is not always enough.

OAI-AdsBot must be able to reach and assess the landing page

A public page can work in a human browser and still be blocked for the crawler by robots.txt, a firewall, CDN, JavaScript challenge, CAPTCHA or geographic rule.

Two different jobs

OAI-AdsBot is not OAI-SearchBot

OAI-AdsBot supports validation and review of advertising landing pages. OpenAI says it must be allowed for ads readiness.

OAI-SearchBot concerns discovery and appearance in ChatGPT Search results. Allowing both may make sense, but each decision should be documented by function.

robots.txt

Check that the landing path is not disallowed to the necessary user-agent and that generic rules do not unexpectedly prevail.

WAF and CDN

Bot protection, IP reputation and rate limits can return 403 or 429 even when robots.txt allows access.

Challenges and CAPTCHAs

Mandatory human verification before content prevents a crawler from reading the page and assessing its destination.

Redirects and geography

Chains, logins, deep links, documents or regional blocks can take the crawler away from the expected page.

Changing the browser user-agent is not enough

Proper verification considers the HTTP response, redirects, received content, server logs, security rules and, when necessary, officially published IP ranges.

Every second and every doubt consumes traffic you already paid for

The page must do more than open: it has to become understandable and usable quickly on mobile, under real network and device conditions.

01

Server response

Hosting, cache and application should deliver useful HTML quickly without relying on a fragile chain of services.

02

Main content

The headline, proposition and primary action arrive early and do not wait for advertising scripts, sliders or unnecessary widgets.

03

Visual stability

Banners, fonts and images must not move the button while someone is reading or trying to interact.

04

Real mobile use

Copy, fields, virtual keyboard, error messages and confirmation are tested on small viewports rather than merely resized.

05

Accessibility

Semantics, focus, labels, contrast and understandable messages improve the human journey and make the interface easier to interpret.

06

Resilience

The proposition remains readable and the flow reports errors correctly even when a secondary resource does not respond.

Explore the causes and costs of poor speed in why your website is slow.

Measure conversions without confusing data with truth

Ads Manager can receive events from the OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API or both. Configuration should start with the business action that matters, not with the tool that happens to be available.

  1. 01

    Define the conversion

A purchase, qualified lead or registration needs an operational meaning and an unambiguous completion point.

  2. 02

    Preserve the reference

The oppref parameter connects a click to later events. Redirects and navigation must preserve it when the implementation requires it.

  3. 03

    Send the correct event

The event fires after actual completion, not when the form loads or the button is simply clicked.

  4. 04

    Deduplicate

When Pixel and API send the same conversion, the same event ID lets the system avoid counting it twice.

  5. 05

    Compare sources

Ads Manager, analytics and commercial data may differ because of attribution, consent, time zones, deduplication and modelling.

  6. 06

    Assess the outcome

CTR and clicks describe the transition. Cost per valid lead, value and customer quality describe the economic result.

A cookieless website may stop being cookieless when advertising measurement is enabled

Choosing to use a pixel or send conversions is not a minor marketing detail: it changes data flows, documentation, consent and testing.

Configure first, activate later

Measurement must be designed for the actual case

OpenAI requires conversion data to be sent only when permitted, after clear information has been provided and all necessary consent obtained where required by law.

For Italy and the European Union, the technology, purpose, data, providers, notices and applicable consent mechanism must be assessed. This technical guide is not legal advice.

Data map

List the parameters, cookies, events, form data, hashing, recipients and retention periods actually involved.

Prior blocking

Where consent is required, the script must not start before the choice and must also respect refusal and withdrawal.

Consistent notices

Privacy and cookie policies must describe what the published site actually does, not what an early draft intended.

Minimisation

Send only the events and data needed for the agreed objective, avoiding custom properties or matching introduced by habit.

To distinguish cookies, banners and analytics, read when a cookieless website needs a banner and the comparison Plausible vs Google Analytics.

For ecommerce, ads and feeds must describe the same catalogue

Ads Manager supports product-feed campaigns in enabled markets. Titles, descriptions, images, availability and landing pages become advertising data, not merely catalogue content.

Current data

Price, availability, identifiers and URLs must match the product page the person actually reaches.

Consistent images

The creative selected from the feed must represent the product without misleading text, wrong variants or irrelevant contexts.

Verified checkout

Basket, costs, delivery, payment, errors and confirmation need end-to-end testing before traffic increases.

Organic remains separate

OpenAI states that during beta, products uploaded for ads do not automatically enter organic conversations.

For catalogues, structured data and organic distribution, read how to sell on ChatGPT.

Mistakes that waste budget or block review

Almost all of them come from artificially separating the campaign, website, infrastructure and measurement.

Sending everyone to the homepage

It forces people to find the product or service already described by the ad all over again.

Promising more than the page

Price, availability, outcome or terms in the ad do not match the destination.

Blocking OAI-AdsBot

Robots or security prevent validation even though the page looks public in your own browser.

Hiding everything behind JavaScript

Useful content arrives late, requires interaction or depends on fragile scripts before becoming understandable.

Measuring a click as a conversion

It optimises towards an intermediate gesture instead of the completed enquiry, sale or registration.

Enabling pixels without governance

The tool goes live before notices, consent, minimisation and technical testing.

Copying a generic landing page

Prefabricated layouts and formulas do not answer the specific objections of the audience and offer.

Assessing only CTR

An ad can win cheap clicks and worthless leads. The outcome must be connected to commercial quality and value.

The page is part of the campaign

Separating media buying and development without a shared objective produces a campaign optimised to bring people to a system that is not ready to receive them.

Checklist before connecting a campaign to the page

Ten checks that clients can understand too: each must have an observable outcome rather than a generic promise.

  1. 01

    Single objective

The primary action and what makes a conversion valid for the business are defined.

  2. 02

    Message consistency

Title, copy, image, offer and page communicate the same proposition without material omissions.

  3. 03

    Direct URL

The destination is public, stable and relevant and requires no login, app or unrelated step.

  4. 04

    Crawler access

OAI-AdsBot receives a correct response and is not blocked by robots, WAF, CDN, CAPTCHA or geography.

  5. 05

    Mobile performance

Main content and action become visible, stable and usable quickly on real devices.

  6. 06

    Accessible journey

Keyboard, focus, fields, errors, contrast and confirmations work even outside ideal conditions.

  7. 07

    Form or checkout

Validation, sending, payment, errors, email and confirmation page have been tested end to end.

  8. 08

    Measurement

UTM, oppref and events remain consistent across redirects and navigation and do not duplicate the conversion.

  9. 09

    Privacy

Data, providers, notices, consent and prior blocking match the published configuration.

  10. 10

    Commercial review

Leads are qualified and compared with costs, margins and value rather than clicks alone.

Page Zero: validate the page before increasing traffic

A landing page is not a smaller website. It is a journey designed around one proposition, one audience and one measurable decision.

Connection to the service

The same discipline required by a conversational channel

If you already have a public website to rethink, Page Zero starts from its pages, proposition and primary action to show a new private homepage before the complete project.

With Ads Manager now open to European advertisers, a focused page can also be evaluated as a ChatGPT Ads destination. Access, audience, policies and measurement still need to be verified before connecting budget to it.

Defined proposition

A concrete promise, recognisable audience and terms that do not emerge only after contact.

Focused journey

Hierarchy, evidence, objections and a primary action without the noise of a general-purpose homepage.

Essential code

A custom page without WordPress, themes or plugins introduced merely to publish one proposition.

Informed decision

Testing shows whether the message and journey deserve broader investment before the budget is multiplied.

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers to keep availability, technical readiness, organic visibility and paid advertising separate.

Is ChatGPT Ads already available in Italy?

Yes. As of 1 September 2026, OpenAI has announced Ads Manager availability for advertisers based in Europe. Actual account access, targetable countries, category and applicable policies still need to be checked before creating a campaign.

Can I buy a position inside organic ChatGPT answers?

No. OpenAI states that ads are separate from answers and do not change their content. Organic citations and sponsored placements rely on different systems.

Why not simply use the homepage?

A homepage often presents several services, audiences and actions. A relevant landing page continues the ad promise and reduces the work required to understand and decide.

What is OAI-AdsBot?

It is the user-agent OpenAI uses to validate and review landing pages linked to ads. It must be able to reach the requested destination.

Are OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot the same?

No. The first concerns advertising readiness and review; the second concerns content discovery for ChatGPT Search. They can be governed separately.

Do ChatGPT Ads require a cookie banner?

It depends on the actual setup. A link with UTM parameters alone is not the same as installing the Pixel. Pixels, cookies, matching and conversion data may require notices, consent and prior blocking under applicable law.

Is the OpenAI Pixel mandatory?

Documentation provides for the Pixel, Conversions API or both when measuring conversions. The choice should reflect the objective, technical requirements and privacy governance.

Does a fast landing page guarantee better conversions?

No. It does remove a measurable obstacle and makes it more likely that someone can read, assess and complete the action without abandoning because of technical problems.

Do structured data help with ads?

No markup guarantees delivery or approval. Consistent machine-readable data remains useful for catalogues, SEO, GEO and information governance, but it does not replace feeds or advertising requirements.

Do product-feed campaigns make products appear in organic answers?

Not during the beta described by OpenAI: products uploaded through Ads Manager are eligible for ads and do not automatically enter organic conversations.

What should I check before creating a campaign from Italy?

Check advertiser access and details, available target countries, sector policies, consistency between the ad and destination, OAI-AdsBot access, conversion behaviour and the privacy setup for the measurement tools that are actually enabled.

What is Page Zero in this context?

It is an offer for people who already own a public website: it lets them see a new private homepage before deciding on the complete project. It neither includes nor promises early access to ChatGPT Ads.
