Short answer
For a company, content or lead-generation website, I would normally choose Plausible: it is simpler, uses no cookies or persistent identifiers in its documented setup and can support a banner-free architecture, subject to assessment. GA4 makes sense when ecommerce, campaigns, attribution, segments and Google integrations produce decisions that justify the additional complexity. It is not “free” if it requires a CMP, implementation, quality control, skills and maintenance that nobody ultimately uses.
There is no universal winner. There is a tool proportionate to the website, the people who will read its reports and the decisions the business is ready to make.

A small website may not need traffic measurement at all. If nobody will use the data, adding code, suppliers and obligations merely to watch a counter creates no value.
Both measure visits and conversions, but they were built with different ambitions and operating models. Comparing them only by feature count almost always leads to the wrong choice.
The product brings pages, sources, campaigns, devices, aggregated locations and events into one dashboard. Its model avoids cookies and persistent identifiers and separates visitor counting by website and day.
Simplicity is a deliberate constraint: it reduces collection and makes it more likely that a client will actually read the report and act on content, sources and goals.
GA4 uses an event-based model and can analyse sessions, journeys, segments, audiences, products, purchases and connections across the Google ecosystem.
That depth can be valuable, but it needs taxonomy, consent, implementation, quality control and people who can tell a useful signal from a merely complicated report.
More data does not mean more knowledge
A dashboard with one hundred dimensions that nobody queries is worth less than five indicators tied to real decisions. Process maturity matters more than the tool’s theoretical power.
The difference extends well beyond cookies. The visitor model, time horizon, integrations and level of available detail all change.

Plausible structurally reduces the scope; GA4 provides more complex controls. Neither replaces an assessment of purposes, configuration and the published website.
Plausible states that it uses no cookies, localStorage or persistent identifiers and aggregates its data. This can support a setup without prior consent, but events, URL parameters, custom properties, contracts and notices must still be checked.
GA4 uses first-party cookies to distinguish users and sessions in its standard JavaScript setup. Consent Mode changes tag behaviour according to a user’s choice, but it does not collect consent instead of a CMP or automatically turn every configuration into a technical tool.
Google tags remain blocked until the user chooses. When consent is denied, no data is sent to Google through those tags.
Tags may load with a denied state and send cookieless pings for modelling. This differs from total blocking and needs a conscious assessment.
Names, full URLs, query strings or properties may transmit personal data even through a privacy-first tool. Minimisation applies to the payload too.
The notice, contract, settings and network requests must describe the same reality. Repeat the check whenever tags or functions change.
The advantage does not come from a promotional kilobyte figure. It comes from the whole chain: scripts, tag managers, CMP, requests, events, integrations and main-thread work.
Plausible is designed for contained measurement and documents one lightweight script. Fewer default capabilities normally mean less code and fewer requests.
A controlled direct GA4 implementation is not automatically the same as a container full of tags. Its footprint grows when Tag Manager, advertising and integrations are added.
Banners, blocking, preferences and conditional scripts add resources and complexity. When a privacy-first architecture avoids the CMP, it removes that layer too.
Network activity, CPU, Core Web Vitals and mobile behaviour must be compared on the real setup—not on empty demos or generic claims.
The correct rule
Do not choose Plausible only because it is “lightweight” or reject GA4 only because it is “heavy”. Choose the smallest scope that produces decisions, then verify the impact of its complete implementation.
The best dashboard is the one people understand and use. The difference emerges in daily work, not in a commercial feature list.
Traffic, sources, campaigns, pages, countries, devices and goals are visible without building reports. It suits frequent checks and fast operational decisions.
Standard reports, explorations, segments, funnels and cohorts support deeper questions, but require configuration and analytical skills.
Forms, downloads, clicks, purchases and custom properties can be measured. A clean convention is still needed to avoid sending unnecessary or sensitive data.
The event model provides substantial detail and integration with products and campaigns. Without a measurement plan, however, it produces inconsistent names and unreliable reports.
It is no longer accurate to describe Plausible as suitable only for brochure websites. It can track purchases, revenue and funnels; GA4 remains stronger when the entire product-level commercial journey matters.
Measure a purchase event, amount, currency, source and selected properties with a relatively simple model.
Observe defined stages and drop-off without reconstructing every catalogue detail and individual behaviour.
Analyse items, categories, coupons, promotions, baskets, checkout, purchases and refunds using standardised parameters.
Connect conversions, attribution and segments to Google Ads, including remarketing when legal basis, consent and configuration permit it.
Cookies, consent, ad blockers, browsers, implementation and definitions alter the numbers. Useful data is consistent and explainable, not necessarily identical to another system.
When GA4 starts only after consent, some visits are not directly observed. A solution that does not need a banner may achieve broader coverage when its setup genuinely allows it.
Either product may be blocked by extensions, DNS or browsers. Proxy and server-side collection change the figure, but also responsibilities and scope.
Visitors, sessions, bounce and conversions are not calculated in the same way. Comparing totals without aligning definitions creates false alarms.
GA4 may apply modelling, sampling or thresholds in particular reports. These are useful tools, but the displayed figure is not always a simple sum of observed events.
The proper cost includes the licence, implementation, consent, maintenance, interpretation and time needed to turn data into decisions.
Pricing depends on traffic, sites and plan features. In return, it funds a product without an advertising business model and makes the tool’s cost explicit.
The platform can be used without a subscription, but tagging, CMP, debugging, dashboards, training and maintenance have a real cost.
More events, tags and integrations increase the risk of errors, regressions, personal data in payloads and reports nobody can interpret.
Paying for any platform and never reviewing sources, pages and conversions is the worst cost: data is collected without producing improvement.
The correct economic comparison
Compare the full annual cost with the value of the decisions it enables. GA4 can be highly valuable for important ecommerce campaigns; when the need is counting visits, Plausible is often cheaper even with a subscription.
The matrix cannot replace a project review, but it makes the criteria that genuinely matter visible.

Running both may make sense—but not through inertia
A parallel period validates the migration. Keeping both forever duplicates requests, maintenance and interpretations; it needs an explicit operational reason.
